Preserving the Lighthouse for Future Generations
Whether you believe in climate change or not, the Bay water is rising. The average number of minor flood days per year in Annapolis has quadrupled since the early 1970s. We’re seeing it — and feeling it — at Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse.
A Climate Resiliency Report shows that Bay waters have risen 20 inches over the past 150 years. They are projected to rise another 20 inches within the next 25 years. By 2100, sea level could be as much as 60 inches higher — which means our corral will be under water.
To protect Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse from rising Bay waters, we must elevate the structure at least six feet to get it out of harm’s way.
Thanks to the generous contributions from donors at our 150th Anniversary Celebration in 2025, we have already raised nearly $50,000 — enough to engage a team of engineers to develop a detailed plan for how the lighthouse can be safely lifted and secured.
In addition, a Congressional bond initiative through the National Park Service’s “Saving America’s Treasures” program has earmarked $100,000 toward this effort, and two additional matching grant proposals are currently pending.
We remain committed to finding a long-term, sustainable solution — ensuring that this iconic lighthouse continues to stand strong for future generations to experience and enjoy.
